Part Way Through Cabinet Installation

Todd, with a little help from Matt, has been working over the last two days to install the cabinets. He did the kitchen first, starting with the window wall and then doing the wall with the stove. He did the lower cabinets first and then did the upper ones. He said it is much easier to do it that way. Then he moved on to the bookcases and cabinets against the back wall of the family room. Today he did the cabinet for the A/V components and the two side cabinets that act as window seats. He also did my desk and the bathroom vanity. The tough cabinets are yet to come -- tomorrow Todd needs to do the island and the banquette. I hope he feels better -- he has been fighting a terrible cold the entire week.

The picture below shows the wall that will have the TV on it. The two side cabinets have two big drawers each and will double as seating. The middle cabinet was built to Jake's very specific requirements, and has pull-out shelves, kerfs in the shelves and the toe kick for ventilation, and all sorts of other features so that it can hold all the A/V equipment (which we don't have yet.)

This picture is my office nook. The cabinets above are a little extra deep to allow me to put all my big binders and everything away. With a little diligence, hopefully there will only be one or two piles on the desk, instead of the whole thing covered with paper!

The bathroom vanity is in a similar vein to all of the other cabinets:

These next two pictures show the kitchen. The top picture is a close up of the window wall cabinets. You can see the hole for the dishwasher. The sink will be to the left of the dishwasher, with a recycling bin next to that. The long, low cabinet in front of the installed cabinets is one of the seats for the banquette -- all the tops came separately. In the bottom picture you can see our two upper cabinets against the wall that the kitchen shares with the dining room. The big cabinet blocking the view of the bottom cabinets is one side of the island -- it is the side that will face the sink.

Finally, the picture up at the top is the table for the banquette. It is beautiful! The top is 1 1/2 inch solid alder. They delivered it the day after the rest of the cabinets. There are still too many cabinets in the family room to take a good picture of the bookshelves, especially since the refrigerator is sitting right in front of them. I'll include a picture when I show the island and the banquette.
